Pictodexer is a no-frills image indexing utility which creates "thumbnail gallery" pictures for folders of image files. Pictodex indexes are modified PICT or JPEG files which means that they can be viewed with any app that can view PICTs or JPEGs. Pictodex files also contain references (relative paths) to the original files so that when viewed with the Pictodex Viewer, you can click on the thumbnails to open the original images in another app for editing or viewing. The Pictodex Viewer can also be used as a simple image viewer since it can display any image type that QuickTime™ can recognize.
Requirements
Pictodexer requires Apple's QuickTime™ 3 and MacOS 8.0 or higher.
Using Pictodexer
Lauch Pictodexer and enter the size, in pixels, that you would like to use for the thumbnail images, select the number of columns of thumbnails that your would like, and choose a background color. Optionally, you can check the "Auto-estimate" box to have Pictodexer make its own best guess based on the number of images and your montior resolution.
Click on the "Format" tab and select either Macintosh PICT format or JPEG format for the saved index files.
On the "Location" tab, choose where to save the index files. Select the "source folder" button if you want Pictodexer to automatically save files inside of the folders it processes (it will automatically name them base on the name of the folder preceeded by a space).
To index a folder, click on the "Process Folder" button or close Pictodexer's window and drag one or more folders of images onto it's icon in the Finder. When you drop files onto Pictodexer's icon, it will use the settings you last entered.
Pictodexer will then generate a Pictodex index of all items in the folder including images inside any subfolders and will record relative paths to the original files based on where you choose to save the Pictodex file. So long as the the Pictodex file and the images remain in the same relative location, the Pictodex file will always be "clickable", even if they are copied or moved to a different disk. (If you choose to save the Pictodex file in a folder which is not in the image folder's branch of your drive then the Pictodex links will be complete paths to the images and will work only as long as the folder of images is not moved.)
How much does it cost?
Pictodexer costs $15 for a single user license which permits one user to user Pictodexer on a single computer. A site license for Pictodexer permits use by any number of users on any number of computers at a single location and costs $75.
